Technology assessments that tell you the truth

Most businesses do not have a technology problem so much as a visibility problem. Nobody knows exactly how many devices exist, which are out of warranty, what licenses are being paid for, whether backups restore, or where the security gaps are. Decisions then get made reactively, under pressure, on incomplete information.

Our assessment fixes that. We inventory hardware, software and licensing; document network topology, firewall rules and Wi-Fi coverage; review identity, endpoint and email security against a defined baseline; verify backup coverage and test a restore; evaluate cloud tenant configuration and spend; and interview staff about the friction they experience daily, which frequently surfaces problems no scan detects.

You receive a written report: findings ranked by risk and business impact, remediation options with real costs, and a suggested sequence. It is yours to keep and use with any provider.

  • Full hardware, software and license inventory with warranty status
  • Network, firewall and wireless documentation and review
  • Security posture assessment against a defined control baseline
  • Backup verification with an actual test restore
  • Cloud configuration and spend review
  • Staff interviews to surface operational friction

Virtual CIO and technology roadmapping

A virtual CIO gives a company too small for a full-time executive the strategic layer it still needs. We meet quarterly with ownership and leadership to review incident trends, project progress, security posture, spend against budget and upcoming business changes — a new location, a hiring push, an acquisition, a compliance requirement — and translate those into a technology plan.

The output is a rolling twelve-to-eighteen-month roadmap with costs attached, so capital expenditure is scheduled rather than triggered by failure. Hardware refresh cycles are mapped against warranty expiry. Software end-of-support dates are tracked in advance. Security investments are sequenced by risk reduction per dollar.

This is also where we say no. A significant part of the role is telling a client that a proposed platform will not deliver what the salesperson promised, or that the existing system has three good years left, or that a cheaper option solves the actual problem.

Cloud strategy, compliance and vendor selection

Cloud decisions are frequently made on vibes. We model them: five-year total cost of on-premises hardware including refresh, power, maintenance and the labor to run it, against cloud consumption pricing at realistic utilization, factoring in bandwidth, egress and licensing differences. Sometimes cloud wins decisively; sometimes it does not, and hybrid is the honest answer.

For compliance, we map the requirements that actually apply to you — HIPAA, PCI-DSS, CMMC, contractual security clauses, cyber insurance conditions — against your current controls, identify the gaps, and produce a remediation plan and the policy documentation auditors expect.

For vendor selection, we write requirements, evaluate options against them, run reference checks, review contracts for the terms that matter (data ownership, exit provisions, support commitments, price escalation) and negotiate. Because we take no commissions, our interest is only in the outcome.

  • Five-year cloud versus on-premises cost modeling
  • Compliance gap analysis and policy documentation
  • Cyber insurance readiness review
  • Requirements definition, vendor evaluation and contract review
  • Line-of-business software selection and implementation oversight

Project management and business continuity planning

Large technology projects fail on coordination more than on technology. Office relocations, ERP implementations, acquisitions, multi-site expansions and major migrations involve contractors, ISPs, software vendors, landlords and your own staff, and the gaps between those parties are where schedules die.

We act as the technical project manager: defining scope and success criteria, sequencing dependencies, holding vendors to dates, managing the cutover plan and communicating status to leadership in language they can act on.

Business continuity planning is a related discipline we handle explicitly. What happens if the building is inaccessible, the internet is down for a day, a key system is encrypted, or the person who knows the most is unavailable? We document recovery procedures, define recovery objectives, arrange the technical capability to meet them and rehearse the plan.

Working with an independent IT consultant

You can engage us for a one-off assessment, a specific project, ongoing vCIO advisory, or as part of a full managed IT agreement where strategic planning is included. There is no requirement to buy managed services to get consulting, and no requirement to take our implementation recommendation.

We work with businesses across Manteca, Stockton, Tracy, Modesto, Ripon, Lodi, Sacramento, the Central Valley, Sacramento region and Bay Area, in healthcare, legal, construction, manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, retail and professional services.

If you are facing a decision you cannot easily reverse — a platform choice, a migration, a compliance deadline, a provider change — an independent second opinion is inexpensive relative to getting it wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to become a managed client to get consulting?
No. Assessments, vCIO advisory and project oversight are available standalone. Strategic planning is also included in managed agreements at no extra cost.
What does a technology assessment cost?
Our initial assessment for small and mid-sized businesses is free and delivered as a written report you keep. Deeper compliance or multi-site assessments are quoted based on scope.
Are you tied to particular vendors?
No. We take no manufacturer commissions. We have preferred platforms based on experience, but the recommendation is driven by fit and cost, not by margin.
Can you help us choose line-of-business software?
Yes. We define requirements, evaluate options, check references, review contracts and oversee implementation on your behalf.
What is a vCIO?
A virtual CIO provides the strategic technology leadership of a full-time executive on a fractional basis — roadmapping, budgeting, risk management and vendor governance, typically through quarterly leadership meetings.
Can you review a proposal from another IT provider?
Yes. Independent proposal reviews are common and often save clients more than the review costs.
